Why Facebook Marketplace Sellers Don't Reply

It's not personal. Here's what's actually happening—and how to fix it.

Reason 1: Your message gave them nothing to work with

A popular listing gets dozens of "Is it available?" messages. The seller has to answer each one, wait for a follow-up that often never comes, and repeat. Sellers on active listings report receiving 10–20 of these messages per day with little to no conversion. After a while, they stop prioritising them.

The problem is so pervasive that Meta launched an AI auto-reply feature for sellers in March 2026 (TechCrunch) specifically to help sellers handle the volume of low-conversion buyer inquiries — a platform-level acknowledgement that vague opening messages are a systemic issue.

When your message shows you're ready to buy—with a proposed time, a specific question, or an offer—you jump to the top of their mental list.

Try this instead:

"Hi, I'd like to buy this. I'm free Thursday after 5pm or anytime Saturday—what works for you?"

Reason 2: The item is already sold

This happens constantly. Sellers forget to mark items as sold once the transaction is done. The listing stays up for weeks after the item is gone.

If a listing is months old and there's no response, this is probably why. Move on and find a fresher listing.

Reason 3: They're not active on Marketplace

Some people post a listing and then don't check Marketplace again for days. They're not ignoring you—they just haven't seen the message. Facebook's notification settings for Marketplace aren't always obvious.

Look at how recently the listing was posted or updated. Very recent = seller is probably active. Months old = maybe not.

Reason 4: They sold it to someone else while you were deciding

Marketplace is first-come, first-served. If you asked a vague question and took 2 hours to follow up, someone else committed and picked it up. The seller has moved on and may not bother messaging you back.

When you see something you want, move fast. Send a clear message and be ready to go.

How to maximise your reply rate

  1. 1.Lead with intent. "I'd like to buy this" is better than "Is it available?" every single time.
  2. 2.Propose a specific time. Sellers love not having to schedule—just say when you're free.
  3. 3.Message during active hours. Evenings and weekends get faster replies than 7am on a Tuesday.
  4. 4.One follow-up after 24 hours is fine. More than that and you cross into pushy territory.
  5. 5.Keep your profile looking real. Sellers check your profile. A blank or private profile raises flags.

Common questions

Can I see if a seller read my message?

Yes—Facebook shows read receipts. If it says "Seen" and there's no reply, they've chosen not to respond. One polite follow-up is okay. After that, move on.

Should I send a follow-up if there's no reply?

One follow-up after 24 hours is reasonable: "Hi, just checking in—still interested if this is available!" If there's still no reply, the item is likely sold or the seller isn't active.
