15 Facebook Marketplace Tips
Practical advice for buyers and sellers to get more out of Marketplace.
Facebook Marketplace has grown to 1.1 billion monthly active users and 250 million sellers across 228 countries, facilitating over 3 billion buyer-seller connections every month — making it the world's largest peer-to-peer local marketplace (Meta, 2024). The US recommerce market it operates within is worth $228 billion in 2025 and growing (OfferUp 2025 Recommerce Report). These tips help you use it effectively.
For sellers
-
1.
Use the item's full name in your title. "IKEA KALLAX shelf unit, white, 4 squares" beats "shelf" every time. Buyers search for specific terms.
-
2.
Post Thursday–Friday for best results. Marketplace traffic peaks over weekends. Getting your listing up before the weekend rush gives you maximum exposure.
-
3.
Reply quickly. Buyers are often messaging multiple sellers. The first to respond often gets the sale. Turn on Marketplace notifications.
-
4.
Share to local buy/sell groups. Facebook lets you cross-post listings to local community groups—this dramatically expands your reach for free.
-
5.
Re-list or renew every few days. Older listings sink in search. Re-listing refreshes your position. You can also edit the listing to trigger a "bump."
-
6.
Use all available photo slots. Listings with more photos get more clicks. Show all sides, condition, what's included, and any damage honestly.
-
7.
State your terms upfront. "Cash only, pickup in [area], no holds without deposit" sets expectations and filters out time-wasters before they message.
-
8.
Keep backup buyers warm. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. If your first buyer falls through (they often do), message the next person on your list immediately.
For buyers
-
9.
Stop asking "Is it available?" and move on. If the listing is up, assume yes. Ask your real question or propose a pickup time instead.
-
10.
Move fast on good listings. Bargains go fast. If you see something you want at a fair price, message with intent immediately. Don't sleep on it.
-
11.
Set up saved searches and alerts. Marketplace lets you save searches and get notified when new listings match. Perfect for hunting specific items.
-
12.
Check the seller's profile. Active Facebook account, ratings, Marketplace history—all signal a trustworthy seller. New accounts with no activity are a yellow flag.
-
13.
Offer to come to them. "I can come to you" is leverage. Sellers love buyers who make it easy. It can be worth a few dollars in price reduction.
-
14.
Test everything before paying. Plug it in, turn it on, open it, check it. Once money changes hands, what you see is what you get.
-
15.
Cancel properly. If plans change, message the seller as soon as possible. "Sorry, something came up—I can't make it" takes 5 seconds and is the right thing to do.
