Facebook Marketplace Buyer's Guide
How to message sellers, make offers, and actually get the stuff you want—without being that buyer.
Your first message sets the tone
The first message you send is make-or-break. Sellers are busy and dealing with dozens of enquiries. A vague message gets ignored. A specific one gets a fast reply.
"Is it available?"
Tells the seller nothing. Often gets ignored.
"Hi! I'd like to buy this. Can I pick it up this Saturday?"
Shows intent, proposes a next step. Gets replies.
"Hello—is the price negotiable? I'm ready to buy today."
Politely signals negotiation and urgency.

The unwritten rules of buying on Marketplace
- 1.Don't ask a question you can answer yourself. If the listing is up, it's probably available. If photos show the condition, you don't need to ask. Read the listing before messaging.
- 2.Don't ghost after the seller replies. If you're no longer interested, a quick "Sorry, I found another one" is common courtesy. Sellers remember flaky buyers.
- 3.If you commit to a pickup time, show up. A no-show wastes the seller's time and they'll likely sell to someone else. If something comes up, message ahead.
- 4.Cash is king. Most sellers prefer cash. Have the right amount ready. Don't expect them to make change for a $100 on a $25 item.
- 5.Inspect before you pay. Test electronics, open boxes, check condition. Once money changes hands, it's yours.
How to negotiate without being rude
Negotiating is completely normal on Marketplace. The key is to be direct and respectful.
- →Make a specific offer: "Would you take $40?" Not: "What's the lowest you'll go?"
- →Don't lowball aggressively—offering 50% of asking price is insulting on most items.
- →If they say no, you can counter once. After that, respect the price or move on.
- →Use your willingness to buy immediately as leverage: "I can come today if you can do $45."

Watch for red flags
Most sellers are honest, but scams exist. Warning signs include:
- ⚠Seller won't meet in person and asks you to ship payment first
- ⚠Price is dramatically below market value with no explanation
- ⚠Only accepts Venmo, Zelle, or gift cards—no cash
- ⚠Account created recently with no profile photos or friends
Common questions
How long should I wait for a reply? ▼
Give it 24 hours. A polite follow-up after that is fine. After 48 hours with no reply, move on.
Can I offer less than the asking price? ▼
Yes—negotiating is expected. A 10–20% lower offer is usually reasonable. Make a specific dollar offer rather than asking what the lowest price is.
What if the seller wants me to pay via Venmo or Zelle? ▼
These are common and usually fine for local transactions—but they offer no buyer protection. Cash is safest for first-time transactions, or use Facebook's built-in checkout if available.
